the Hope of Survivors

Hear My Cry—Samantha Nelson

PrayerHear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.” (Psalm 61:1)

Early this morning, while unable to sleep, I began to pray. My heart has been heavy for some time now for many reasons. I prayed again for deliverance from the fiery trials at hand, for family members and loved ones, for our churches, for The Hope of Survivors, Unlocking Truth and more. God doesn’t always answer prayer immediately, yet this morning He answered two prayers right away. His Word is true, “And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.” (Isaiah 65:24)

The first prayer He answered was my petition for the financial needs of The Hope of Survivors. When I finished praying, I checked email and there was a message from someone who said they wanted to begin to support The Hope of Survivors. Praise the Lord! Every new commitment and donation helps!

The second prayer He answered was a little bit later when Steve and I were having our morning devotional. My request had been for God to not only love me, which I know He does because He created me and I am His child, but to desire to be with me, to enjoy me as a person, to want to spend time with me as His daughter. Like some of you, I didn’t grow up knowing the love of a father. Neither my father nor stepfather knew how to love unconditionally or well, and that created many heartaches for me throughout my life. I struggled to comprehend God as a loving Father when my earthly fathers had failed to help me understand the love a father has for a daughter. I was not expecting God to answer my prayer so quickly, or in the manner in which He did, but it reveals His tender, compassionate care for me, His daughter.

As we were reading the devotional, these words struck my heart and filled my eyes with tears and my heart with joy. “Our Saviour wants you to keep in close relation to Himself, that He may make you happy.” (The Faith I Live By, page 123) God—Creator of the Heavens and Earth—wants to make me happy? That was His answer to me. Truly, my heavenly Father delights in me and rejoices over me with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)

If you struggle to comprehend the love of God for you, I invite you to try Him. As the Psalmist wrote in Psalm 34:8, “O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.” God will not fail you. I don’t know how or when He will answer your prayers, but I know He will. And, most importantly, I know He loves you

In closing, may the Lord bless thee, and keep thee: the Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: the Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)
