FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 1, 2005 – Thompsonville, IL: Pastoral Sexual Abuse Informational Materials to be Distributed
During a press conference to be held on September 8, at the Comfort Inn, Willoughby, Ohio, materials addressing the issue of pastoral sexual abuse and misconduct will be distributed to those who desire to learn more or who are seeking help.
The purpose of the conference is to raise awareness of the escalating problem of pastoral sexual misconduct, and to provide information about The Hope of Survivors’ outreach ministry and educational efforts on behalf of both victims and church leaders. The Hope of Survivors is inter-denominational, and provides information and support to adult women and their families who have been abused by a pastor (or other person in the role of spiritual authority), and provides educational training, prevention and support for pastors and church leaders.
“Being a pastor is a calling, not a profession. A pastor cannot leave his calling behind when he walks out from the behind the pulpit. As in the Canfora’s case, any time a pastor uses his position and title to gain the trust and confidence of another individual, and then betrays that sacred trust by manipulating the person into a sexual or intimate relationship, it is abuse. It is an imbalance of power and a betrayal of sacred trust,” says Samantha Nelson, Vice-President of The Hope of Survivors. “We hope to continue to provide counsel, support and healing, by God’s grace, to the Canfora’s and the many others just like them.”
The Hope of Survivors is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping victims of pastoral sexual abuse and misconduct, as well as providing educational and informational materials and seminars to pastors and churches worldwide.
