the Hope of Survivors

Letter from the Vice President—Samantha Nelson

(From the July 2013 edition of HopeSpeak)

Dear Hope of Survivors Family,

Are you feeling the heat? I know many of you are suffering with temperatures over 100 degrees right now. Thankfully, in Omaha, it is “only” in the 90s—unlike last year when it was above 100 degrees for weeks on end.

If you’re not feeling the heat temperature-wise, my guess is you are feeling it in some other way. Perhaps it’s a conflict at work, financial stress, interpersonal relationship issues or—what many of you reading this have experienced—abuse by a spiritual leader.

Did you know our God has promised to be a shelter, a refuge, a place where you can hide under the shadow of His wings and find rest, peace and comfort? (Ps. 61:3; Ps. 9:9; Ps. 17:8; Matt. 11:28; Ps. 119:50) I encourage each of you to spend some time with Him today (and every day) to really experience the benefit of His peace. I believe, as you do so, the temperature outside and the “fires” in your life will become less burning and perplexing.

While my personal “heat” of late is an overflowing schedule and endless to-do list (which is why you haven’t received many updates lately), I am so thankful God brought The Hope of Survivors into existence! Through this ministry, I have seen Him at work to bring back the “sheep” that have been driven from His fold by the wolves in sheep’s clothing who professed to care for them. Ezekiel chapter 34 is a powerful testimony against those who harm God’s flock. The Hope of Survivors is a tool in God’s hands to facilitate healing in the lives of victims of clergy sexual abuse. It is truly a privilege and sacred responsibility to manage this organization and oversee the many volunteers who serve those in need. Your support of The Hope of Survivors is what has enabled us to bind up the brokenhearted and set the captives free. (Isaiah 61:1)

My prayer is the articles in this issue will be a blessing to each of you in some way. God has blessed with many opportunities to raise awareness of clergy sexual abuse so far this year, and many more events and projects are in the works right now. Don’t forget—this August we will celebrate the 3rd Annual Clergy Sexual Abuse Awareness & Prevention® campaign. It’s not too late to do something in your area!

Please check the Calendar page to see all the upcoming seminars and events planned in Florida, California, Hawaii, Alabama, Romania and more! And, please continue to pray for and support The Hope of Survivors with your love offerings as we strive to educate in order to prevent abuse and, when prevention has failed, facilitate healing in the broken lives of victims around the globe.

God bless you,
Samantha Nelson
Vice President & CEO

P.S. In an unexpected turn of events, we have been informed there is a possibility of a property being donated to The Hope of Survivors to use as a safe haven for victims. The potential donors are awaiting an answer to their personal prayer and expect that answer to come in July. Please pray God will answer their prayer—and ours—according to His will!
