Why The Hope of Survivors?—Samantha Nelson

April 21, 2015

Dear Friends,

Have you ever wondered why there's a need for The Hope of Survivors? I mean, why have such a niche ministry? Surely there can't be that many victims of clergy sexual abuse? Well, let me tell why there's such a need for The Hope of Survivors.

Each year approximately 100 new victims contact The Hope of Survivors for emotional and spiritual support. About 10,000-15,000 people visit the website each month. That tells us there are many victims who find the information and support they need directly through the website. I can't imagine how we'd minister to 10,000+ victims if they all contacted us directly each month! Some victims are so frightened they wait years to reach out for help, even though they've said they'd been reading the website for years. It took them that long to get the courage to reach out for help. Over the past 13 years, we have helped thousands of clergy sexual abuse victims find hope and healing.

This latest headline, "Pascagoula man sexually abused girl during Bible study sessions, justified it with Scripture," found online at http://www.sunherald.com/2015/04/19/6184834_pascagoula-man-sexually-abused.html, is another reason why The Hope of Survivors exists. Truly, clergy sexual abuse is taking place at alarming rates in every faith community worldwide. Who is there to help the victims? The Hope of Survivors!

When you financially support The Hope of Survivors, you are enabling us to produce resources that will help victims recover from the devastating trauma and effects of clergy sexual abuse. You help us to educate clergy and church leaders about the issue and facilitate prevention of the abuse. You save lives and marriages. You help change the faith community by enabling us to bring about greater awareness of this issue through exhibiting at conventions, speaking engagements, etc. We can't do it without your help. Thank you for partnering with The Hope of Survivors as we continue to bind up the brokenhearted and set the captives free (Luke 4:18).

Here are some upcoming events where we will be sharing the message of hope and healing and educating others about clergy sexual abuse. Please pray for and support these endeavors if possible. Thank you.
